Description of Doddieburn

Doddieburn is probably one of the most famous game ranches in Africa due to its very interesting and extended history. This is a true google legend with over 150000 hits if you should choose to find more information on it. First made famous by the Henderson family as many years ago as the 1950's the farm itself has had a tremendous roller coaster ride especially from a proprietary point of view. Nevertheless the ranch has been awarded to H&F in 2007 under a 40 (forty) year lease. The farm was extremely dilapidated and badly poached, but we have nearly managed to restore the property to it's former glory by fixing the old farm stead, building a new lodge and re- introducing wildlife which include buffalo, lion and sable.

The property that lies in the Matebeleland about 300 (three hundred) kilometres south of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and is 37 000 (thirty-seven thousand) hectares or about 100 000 (one hundred thousand) acres in size and is typical bush veldt habitat, with many rocky outcrops and perennial river beds. This ranch once had the largest population of giraffe in the world per square kilometre, and still has the biggest concentration of crocodile on private land in Zimbabwe patrolling the Tsibisini Lake on the property. The property caters for 4 (four) of the 5 (five) big five hunts and also hunting for sable is high on the list of must do's.

The property has 8 (eight) sleeper 5 star lodge build on the banks of the Umzimgwani River. The lodge complete build from natural materials, which includes the bricks made from local ant hill soils. A second camp is currently under planning and to be built in the eastern side of the property in the rocky outcrops it hosts.

Doddieburn is easily accessible due to its proximity to Bulawayo and the fact that direct commercial flights from Johannesburg are regular.

Species to be hunted

Main species to be hunted are: baboon, buffalo, bushbuck, bushpig, caracal, crocodile, duiker, duiker-gray, eland, giraffe, hippopotamus, hyena, impala, jackal, klipspringer, kudu, leopard, lion, monkey, nyala, ostrich, porcupine, sable, steenbok, tsessebe, warthog, waterbuck, wildebeest-blue, zebra-burchell.

Accommodation

Doddieburn probably has one of the most scenic lodges in the Matebeleland Region of Zimbabwe. Newly constructed on the banks of the Umzimgwani River over looking a beautifully decorated "gomo" (hill) with ancient baobab trees this lodge is truly a jewel of the bushveld.
